Following a Supreme Court ruling in June the government has today announced reforms which will allow all couples the option of marriage or a civil partnership.
The reform will make the law equal and open up a new option for couples who dislike the idea of traditional marriage but want legal recognition of their relationship.
The couple will then benefit from increased rights to inheritance and pensions. No date for the reforms has been announced although the initial suggestion that it would be achieved by 2020 was criticized by the court as too long.
It will not extend these additional rights to couples who cohabit and have not married or entered into a civil partnership.
